Appleby Announces Recipients of the 2026 Liesl Richter Legal Scholarship Programme

Following a highly competitive selection process, the four recipients were chosen from an exceptional pool of applicants. This year’s programme attracted more than twice the number of applications received in previous years, with an outstanding calibre of submissions from talented young Caymanians, reflecting the growing interest in pursuing a career in law.

The Liesl Richter Legal Scholarship Programme was established in the 1980s and was renamed in 2023 in memory of our cherished colleague, Corporate Partner, and former scholarship recipient, Liesl Richter. It is one of the Cayman Islands’ most comprehensive legal scholarship initiatives, providing funding valued at more than USD150,000. The scholarship supports recipients throughout their legal education, covering a law degree and subsequent postgraduate qualifying courses or examinations, whether at the Truman Bodden Law School or an approved overseas university.

In addition to covering tuition fees, examination fees and textbook costs, the programme offers recipients four weeks of paid work experience each summer within one of Appleby’s practice groups: Corporate, Dispute Resolution, Private Client & Trusts, or Real Estate. This practical experience enables recipients to apply their academic learning, work on complex client matters and build lasting connections with experienced practitioners throughout their studies.
