About the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man is a UK Crown Dependency located in the heart of the British Isles. As a jurisdiction, the Isle of Man has developed a reputation as a premier international finance centre in terms of innovation and regulation whilst retaining the delicate balance between providing a business-friendly environment and meeting international standards of financial supervision.

The island has a rich history dating back to before 6500 BC and has its own democratically elected Parliament called Tynwald, which dates back more than 1,000 years to be the world’s oldest continuous parliament.

The Crown Dependencies law firm

Appleby is the only international law firm with a presence in all three of the British Crown Dependencies – Guernsey, Isle of Man and Jersey. It means our Isle of Man lawyers have the ability to work closely with colleagues in Guernsey and Jersey to provide clients with a seamless and consistent pan-jurisdictional service from the same firm.

Our Crown Dependencies capability statements highlight the firm’s combined multi-jurisdictional offshore offering in further detail across our Corporate, Dispute Resolution, Regulatory, and Private Client & Trusts practice areas.

Corporate responsibility

Appleby Isle of Man is committed to supporting local charities and organisations. At the heart of our corporate responsibility strategy in the Isle of Man is a series of programmes that support the environment and ecosystem.

the isle of man woodland trust

Appleby is proud to be gold sponsors of the Isle of Man Woodland Trust. Our donations contribute to the funding of new trees and other materials used to maintain and enhance the woodland, helping to support local biodiversity. We also volunteered and took part in two tree planting sessions where over 300 trees were planted, the trees were native species helping to support local biodiversity.

beach buddies

Appleby colleagues supported local charity Beach Buddies with two beach cleaning sessions around the Isle of Man. The charity tackles the ongoing issue of litter that is left or washed up onto our beaches, we also made a donation to help Beach Buddies continue to keep our Island’s beaches clean.

Appleby have made donations to local charity Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch. The charity work voluntarily year-round to ensure the safeguarding of whales, dolphins and porpoises in Manx territorial waters through non-invasive research and public awareness efforts. The charity will also be delivering an educational talk to Appleby colleagues in the coming months.

love tech wildlife challenge

Appleby sponsored Love Tech‘s Wildlife Challenge, the charity aims to inspire and empower girls and young women to explore opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through events, educational support and mentorship.

Love Tech partnered with the Manx Wildlife Trust and UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man to encourage young families to get outside and explore nature across 8 of the island’s natural habitats. Children will be encouraged to use tech by scanning QR codes on the signs at each location, finding out more about our Biosphere and making pledges to protect it. Find out more about the challenge here.

Appleby Isle of Man took part in two beach cleaning sessions at the Manx Wildlife Trust’s Ayres Nature Discovery Centre with Beach Buddies and the Manx Wildlife Trust.

As Appleby are sponsors of the centre, we were keen for colleagues to take a visit up north and see the great work that the Manx Wildlife Trust team has done in renovating and developing a new interpretation for visitors.
