Appleby is proud to announce that partner Simon Florance has become the first Appleby, and second Guernsey lawyer appointed as a fellow of the prestigious International Academy of Financial Crime Litigators

Founded in 2018 in collaboration with the Basel Institute of Governance, the Academy is an independent ‘global centre of excellence’ bringing together leading financial-crime litigation professionals and academics.

Fellows are handpicked for their extensive experience in financial crime litigation, with membership criteria requiring professionals to have been fully engaged in the field for at least 10 years and to demonstrate a proven track record in financial and economic crime cases.

Simon has more than 30 years’ experience as a lawyer, including 20 years in Guernsey, and specialises in financial crime, sanctions and other regulatory matters. His practice includes anti-money laundering, investigations and enforcement, criminal confiscation and civil forfeiture, as well as complex commercial litigation.

His appointment places him among a select international group of practitioners and academics working to advance best practice in financial crime litigation, promote international cooperation and share expertise across jurisdictions.

Simon said: “It is a real privilege to be appointed as a Fellow of the International Academy of Financial Crime Litigators and to join such a distinguished international group of practitioners and academics. Financial crime is increasingly complex and cross-border in nature, making collaboration and the exchange of experience between jurisdictions more important than ever. I look forward to contributing my experience from Guernsey while also learning from leading practitioners from around the world. This appointment also reflects the strength of financial crime and regulatory expertise we have here in Guernsey and I am delighted to represent Appleby within the Academy.”

The appointment further strengthens Appleby Guernsey’s financial crime and regulatory offering and reflects the firm’s top-tier Dispute Resolution practice.
