The three-day Society of Actuaries (SOA) annual meeting typically attracts senior annuity, finance, life and reinsurance professionals. Brad will speak on a 24 August panel session titled ‘Life & Annuity Sidecars’ to provide an overview of life and annuity sidecars, and considerations for insurers and investors.

The SOA extended an invitation to Brad to participate in its Chicago event following last month’s Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers (BILTIR) roundtable hosted by Appleby. During the roundtable, Brad led an information session to BILTIR members on life sidecars.

According to the SOA, sidecars are prominent in the US Life & Annuity industry as an alternative reinsurance structure whereby Life & Annuity insurers can access third-party capital and new capital providers can support insurers in de-risking their balance sheets.

Brad, who is also Bermuda Group Head of the Corporate department and the Global Sector Leader for Insurance & Reinsurance at Appleby, has extensive experience in all insurance and reinsurance matters, and in particular, life insurance securitisations. He has advised, structured, incorporated and registered numerous commercial life companies. He also advises clients on a wide range of transactions including sidecars, catastrophe bonds, special purpose insurers and other fully collateralised structures, insurance-linked securities and alternative collateralised reinsurance investment transactions.

Brad is ranked in Band 1 for Insurance by Chambers Global 2022 and as a Leading Individual for Insurance/Reinsurance by The Legal 500 2022. Clients say he is “one of the most notable insurance lawyers, both in Bermuda and internationally” (Chambers Global) and is “incredibly knowledgeable about the Bermuda insurance space” (The Legal 500). Brad regularly appears in major insurance transactions and is well-regarded for his deep knowledge of reinsurance, securities and insurance company formation mandates. He has also been recognised for his significant contributions by Bermuda Risk Transfer Hall of Fame published in Bermuda:Re+ILS magazine.
