Last year Appleby was approached by a young Jersey Victoria College student to promote physical and mental health and wellbeing in senior schools in Jersey. Sammy Cooil, Deputy Head Boy at Victoria College 2020-2021, approached the law firm in his continuing endeavours to raise funds for local charities in order to support the local community. A community partnership was formed, with the objective of providing blood pressure monitors along with pulse oximeters and hosting mental health awareness sessions in all senior schools in Jersey throughout the course of 2020.

Covid subsequently impacted these objectives, so the partnership changed tack and Appleby funded Sammy’s proposal to provide all Jersey senior schools with infrared digital thermometers. It was considered an especially relevant time for schools to be able to check the temperature of students. Eleven senior schools were supplied with digital thermometers in 2020.

The community partnership is now able to continue with its roll out of blood pressure monitors and pulse oximeters. This roll out will be accompanied by a podcast series on mental health.

Jersey Managing Partner James Gaudin commented “We are thrilled to embark on the next stage of our partnership with Sammy Cooil. We see this inspiring initiative as an innovative way to promote both physical and mental wellbeing on the island.”
