Why did you choose to go into the re/insurance industry?
Having started my legal career as a corporate lawyer in the U.K. I was given the opportunity to relocate to Bermuda and work within Appleby’s re/insurance team in 2017. I was excited by the opportunity, both on a personal level (Bermuda is a fantastic place to build a life) and from a career perspective.
Re/insurance is a diverse, fast moving industry and being able to be part of that in a major re/insurance centre has been as challenging and fulfilling as I had hoped.
Do you think the industry is attractive to young professionals?
Working with Appleby’s dynamic re/insurance team gives young professionals the ability to work with high profile clients in a leading regulatory environment. The quality and fast pace of the work coupled with the ability to work with leading re/insurance lawyers (both within Appleby and globally) is something that I think attracts young professionals to the legal side of the industry.
Do you think the re/insurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals?
There is a wide variety of roles and career paths available in the re/insurance industry so there really is something for everybody. Many of our interns and pupils express interest in joining Appleby’s re/insurance team to take advantage of the opportunities that it offers.
What are your aspirations for the future?
I look forward to continuing to develop as a lawyer in Bermuda, building on the relationships I have developed here within the industry, growing the client base and taking on more responsibilities. I think it is key to ensure that the industry continues to attract talented, committed individuals and I look forward to mentoring our interns and pupils that wish to pursue a career in the re/insurance industry.
