What drew you to the Appleby programme?

There were many different features which drew me to the Appleby programme. Having the chance to complete a seat within each of the three different teams – the Corporate team, Dispute Resolution and Property – over the course of two years allows me to develop my skills and ultimately will help me in deciding which type of law I would like to qualify into in the future.

Appleby has given me the opportunity to pursue my chosen qualification route of the English and Welsh Solicitors Qualifying Exams (SQE) and have provided constant support throughout this journey.

The variety of legal work carried out in the firm, ranging from transactional work to family law related matters really appealed to me.  Working within a firm which continues to grow and develop, within a team which makes me feel valued makes me excited for my future development with Appleby.

What kind of support and mentoring have you received from the Appleby team?

Since starting at Appleby, I have always felt supported and felt at ease to ask questions to my senior colleagues when they arise.

I have always received useful and detailed feedback on work that I have completed, with colleagues going out of their way to help with my personal development and learning, despite having busy schedules and workloads. I have been able to learn and gain valuable on the job experience, taking responsibility on a wide range of different matters.

The level of integration with senior partners and colleagues is a strong indicator of the mentoring ethos at Appleby. Colleagues have arranged regular catch-up sessions and provided me with support, mentorship and guidance throughout my training contract journey.

They have also been extremely supportive in supporting me through my chosen qualification pathway (SQE), while I navigate the journey of studying alongside working.  I have been able to speak to others who have qualified with Appleby about their first-hand experience of these exams, which has really helped me to remain positive and inspired me to persevere through any struggles I face.

Team members have arranged regular training sessions which have focused on their areas of expertise, with accompanying handouts. This has allowed me to reflect on distinct areas of the law in isolation and digest the details, with dedicated time to ask questions.

How would you describe the culture at Appleby?

I would describe the culture as being very friendly and open.  From day one, it was clear that the firm was focused on the individual and their development. That came across in the interview process and I can confirm that, now that I am here, it is real!

It has been really easy to get to know everyone, which says a lot about the open and friendly culture within the firm.

There is a variety of social events which take place. I look forward to spending time with people from different teams who I wouldn’t normally see on a day-to-day basis.

I would also say that there is a collaborative culture at Appleby, everyone has made me feel very welcome and although being at the start of my legal career I have always been made to feel a valued member of the team, with my views being heard.

How has Appleby helped you grow professionally and personally?

From day one, I have been made to feel part of the team and given real responsibility while being supported by all levels. I have had the opportunity from a very early stage to work with extremely experienced lawyers and work with the whole team. I have got a real variety of work to do, while working with colleagues from different jurisdictions. I have been able to greatly improve my technical ability and look forward to continuing my personal and professional development.
