Bio

Alvin is a Partner in the Dispute Resolution department of Appleby’s Shanghai office, and a Legal Manager of Appleby’s Hong Kong office.

He dedicates his practice to corporate, commercial and regulatory disputes across Asia. With over a decade of experience, he represents clients in high-value arbitration, litigation, regulatory matters and corporate investigations, with a focus on the financial services sector, professional services industry and multinational corporations.

Alvin regularly advises companies on regulatory investigations and offers strategic guidance to investment banks and corporations on internal investigations and compliance matters.  He also handles disputes and arbitrations involving substantial financial claims in sectors and industries such as biopharmaceuticals, technology, professional services and real estate. Fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, Alvin is adept at navigating complex, cross-border legal challenges and delivering strategic solutions for clients.

He read Law at the University of Cambridge and obtained an MEng in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London. Alvin is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).  This dual background provides him with practical understanding of technical and analytical matters, which further supports him in delivering commercially sensitive solutions.

Prior to joining Appleby, Alvin spent more than ten years at O’Melveny in Hong Kong.

Litigation Experience*

  • Defended the main contractor in a high-profile public inquiry and related commercial disputes, criminal and regulatory investigations arising from a US$10 billion rail project.
  • Represented a global accounting and consulting firm in a claim against former senior executives for commercial fraud and breaches of fiduciary duties.
  • Advised international investment banks on mis-selling claims, securities litigation and other investment disputes.
  • Acted for a Hong Kong-listed company in a contractual claim for damages exceeding HK$3.3 billion.
  • Advised a Hong Kong public utility company on a multi-million dollar contractual dispute with a supplier.
  • Represented a PRC company and its majority shareholder in court proceedings involving a US$140 million dispute with a global private equity firm.
  • Represented an Asian investment firm in a US$200 million dispute with a US-listed real estate company.
  • Advised a global insurance company on a dispute with an international financial services company arising from professional negligence.

Regulatory Disputes*

  • Represented Hong Kong-listed companies, their directors and management, as well as international insurance brokers, in investigations and enquiries by regulators, including the Securities and Futures Commission and the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong.
  • Represented several US Big Tech companies in regulatory and antitrust matters.
  • Advised a major precious metals supplier on anti-money laundering compliance.
  • Advised an international clothing company on corruption investigations.
  • Acted for an international insurance broker in regulatory investigations and proceedings.
  • Defended an international accounting firm against allegations relating to misfeasance of office holders.
  • Represented a PRC bank in liquidation proceedings brought against a Hong Kong-listed company and its subsidiaries by the Securities and Futures Commission.

Arbitration Experience*

  • Represented a PRC company and its majority shareholder in arbitral proceedings involving a US$140 million dispute with a global private equity firm.
  • Acted for a Korean-listed biopharmaceutical company in multiple arbitrations with European distributors.
  • Defended a biotechnology company in an arbitration involving a US$100 million dispute with a French pharmaceutical company.
  • Represented a multinational chocolate manufacturer in various arbitrations.
  • Acted for a PRC environmental consultancy in an arbitration involving a wind farm project in Inner Mongolia.
  • Represented a founder of a private equity and alternative investment firm in an arbitration involving a US$1 billion investment dispute.
  • Defended a Mexican state-owned enterprise in a shipbuilding arbitration.
  • Acted for a media company in an arbitration involving an investment dispute.
