Bio

Charles is a counsel in the Corporate Department of Appleby’s Hong Kong office, specialising in contentious and non-contentious restructuring and insolvency matters. With extensive experience handling complex, high-stakes matters, Charles has successfully advised on cross-border and multi-jurisdictional cases, including the appointment of provisional liquidators and the implementation of parallel schemes of arrangement.

He regularly works with insolvency practitioners, investment banks, commercial banking institutions, directors, and shareholders, offering strategic guidance and tailored solutions. Charles also has a strong background in commercial litigation, including unfair prejudice claims, derivative actions, and just and equitable winding-up applications.

Fluent in English and Cantonese, with working knowledge of Mandarin, Charles bridges communication gaps in diverse contexts. Prior to joining Appleby, he worked at another offshore law firm in Hong Kong.

Work Highlights
  • Advising the China Aoyuan Group in relation to the restructuring of its approximately US$7.3 billion offshore debt by way of parallel schemes of arrangement in the Cayman Islands, BVI and Hong Kong.
  • Advising the Century Sunshine Group in relation to the appointment of Provisional Liquidators in the Cayman Islands, BVI and Bermuda and the provisional liquidation which ultimately led to the restructuring of its debts of approximately US$500 million via parallel schemes of arrangement in Hong Kong and Singapore.
  • Advising the Provisional Liquidators in relation to the restructuring of US$1 billion debts and liabilities of China Lumena New Materials Corp.
  • Advising the Liquidators in relation to the restructuring of China Agrotech Limited, resulting in a successful reverse takeover and relisting on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
  • Advising China Singyes Solar Technologies Holdings Limited on the successful restructuring of greater than HK$4 billion outstanding bonds and convertible notes through parallel schemes of arrangement in Bermuda and Hong Kong.
