More than 145 people joined forces for an exciting day of cycling on Bank Holiday Monday.
The ninth annual Appleby Sportive, on Monday 7 May 2018, attracted 147 participants as they tackled one of four courses, ranging in length from 38km to 118km, in sunny conditions.
Starting and finishing at Ramsey Rugby Club in Mooragh Park, the longer routes comprise many roads not typically used in local races, with more than 1,500 metres of ascent, including the climbs of Druidale and Slieau Whallian, that offer fantastic views around the Island and its coast.
Matt Looker was the quickest on the 118km course finishing 3:31:19, beating last years’ time by 10 minutes. Mark Horsthuis completed the 100km course in an impressive time 3:09:34.
On the 72km route Martin Edwards completed the course in 2:26:56 and in the 38km Debbie Cain crossed the line in 1:30:05.
Leading offshore law firm Appleby has supported the Sportive since it began, as part of its ongoing sponsorship of the Ellan Vannin Cycling Club (EVCC); a partnership which began in 2010.
It also assists the club by supplying branded cycling kit for club members and helping with other cycling events in the Island.
Sportive organiser and EVCC Chairman Richard Fletcher said: “The support from riders and spectators alike really summed up the spirit of what this community event is all about.
“A big thank you to everyone who came along, both new and familiar faces, and to Appleby for their continued support.”
Mark Holligon, Partner and Group Head of the Dispute Resolution department, said: “The Appleby Sportive is an event for all abilities and ages and has a real community atmosphere. It was great to see the cyclists enjoying themselves and our staff supporting this initiative by managing the water station at Brandywell Cottage. We are proud to be the main sponsor of the EVCC, it is always a pleasure and we look forward to continuing the positive work going forward.”
