Tim Faries is a Partner and Local Group Head – Corporate and Commercial in Bermuda. He is also the Insurance Group Team Leader and leads a team of lawyers who specialise in all manner of non-contentious corporate insurance work, including life and general insurance and reinsurance, mutual insurance and structured risk financing.
Tim is the immediate past Global Head of Appleby’s Private Client & Trust practice, and in that capacity was recognised amongst the world’s 50 most influential private client practitioners for 2009/10 by Private Client Practitioner magazine.
Tim first qualified in 1991, joined the Group in 1993 and became a partner in 2000.
In the corporate world Tim has extensive experience of public and private insurance company capital raising and M&A activity, public listings on US, UK and European securities exchanges, the establishment and licencing of alternative risk financing vehicles such as cat bonds, ILWs and other insurance-linked securities, and captive insurance companies in established and emerging markets.
Tim’s leadership of the insurance practice has encompassed the development of a regulatory practice in Bermuda, as the jurisdiction has enhanced its regulatory framework in advance of the advent of Solvency II, and the build out of the firm’s capabilities in the industry in the Cayman Islands, Isle of Man and Guernsey.
Tim is a regular speaker at insurance industry conferences both in Bermuda and abroad, and is a frequent author of articles and other thought pieces pertaining to the Bermuda insurance industry.
Tim is endorsed as a leading lawyer in the 2012 IFLR Lawyer Rankings for Finance and Corporate, PLC Which Lawyer 2011 directory for Insurance and the Chambers 2011 Rankings for Insurance, and recommended for Commercial in the 2010 Legal 500 rankings for Bermuda. Chambers Global 2012 said he is "a seasoned lawyer who provides very solid advice." He is prominent on non-contentious corporate insurance transactions.
Tim is a member of the board of directors of Business Bermuda.
Tim also acts as a Director on Private Trust Companies and advises wealthy families on the complex issues arising from holding large portfolios of specialist assets.
