Simon Harding is a partner in the Corporate & Commercial department and is the Isle of Man Team Leader for the Funds & Investment Services team and the Insurance team. He brings to the table extensive experience gained in working both on and off the Isle of Man. As well as being involved in a wide range of mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance transactions, Simon has advised on many financial services, regulatory and insurance matters. He has also been involved in the establishment and restructuring of numerous Isle of Man based funds and in providing ongoing advice to such funds. 

He qualified as an Isle of Man Advocate in 1998 before leaving the Island to work as an assistant solicitor at Maclay Murray & Spens in Glasgow. Simon returned to the Island in 2000 and worked as an associate with Cains until 2004, before joining the firm and becoming a partner in 2005.

Simon was named as a 'Leader in his Field' by Chambers UK 2012. He was also named as a ‘Leader in his Field’ by Chambers Europe 2011 and 2010. In Chambers Global 2009 he is praised for his corporate, finance and funds expertise: 'He's willing to drop everything and focus on one matter to get a structure in place within the required timeframe'. Legal 500 commends Simon for growing the 'excellent, very responsive and knowledgeable' funds practice. Simon is also ranked as a leader in PLC Which Lawyer? 2009, Corporate/M&A as 'a respected transactional lawyer whose expertise also covers corporate finance, financial services, regulatory and insurance issues'.

Some recent examples of his representative work include advising:
  • Laxey Partners Ltd in connection with the acquisition of two London-listed companies, TDG plc and Laxey Investment Trust plc, by LIT plc, an Isle of Man SPV, by way of two parallel schemes of arrangement in the UK and admission of shares in LIT plc (now DouglasBay Capital PLC) to trading on AIM
  • A fund management house in relation to the establishment of a protected cell master-feeder fund structure, as specialist funds, to invest in preference debt
  • Absolute Capital Management Limited on spinning off its Argo investment management business into a separate holding company, Argo Group Limited, and the admission of shares in that company to listing on AIM
  • On the establishment and licensing of a specialist distressed debt investment management operation in the Isle of Man
  • On the restructuring of a stable of special situations hedge funds managed by an Isle of Man based investment manager for regulatory and operational reasons
