Jeffrey Kirk is a partner in the Corporate & Commercial department at Appleby. He joined the firm in 2007, initially practising out of the London office before moving to the Bermuda office, and subsequently to the Hong Kong office when made a partner in 2009.

He has extensive experience advising on the laws of the Cayman Islands, BVI and Bermuda with regard to project, acquisition and asset finance, general banking matters, public and private company M&A, funds and investment services (including Islamic funds), (re)insurance - corporate, capital markets and transactional matters, and the formation and operation of special-purpose investment vehicles (including the use of segregated accounts-portfolio companies).

Prior to joining Appleby, Jeffrey’s experience includes having worked in the financial services teams of Reynolds Porter Chamberlain and Clifford Chance, and having been in-house counsel for Lloyd’s of London and for the Oasis Group (a boutique investment management house).

Jeffrey is a frequent speaker and panellist at seminars and conferences, including the Islamic Finance News Hong Kong Roadshow and the Fund Forum Asia.  He is often invited to write articles on all aspects of offshore (re)insurance, hedge and Shariah fund structuring and other corporate issue, and contributes to a variety of publications, including The Lawyer, The Bermuda Royal Gazette, Finance Publications Offshore and Mondaq.

He speaks, reads and writes English and Afrikaans.

Representative work includes advising:

  • Asia Development Bank in the project financing for the construction of PRC wind power plants
  • A sovereign wealth fund in relation to its investments in Cayman Islands hedge funds and its proposed equity investment in the PRC medical sector
  • eStats Funds Management on the formation of master/feeder funds in Bermuda
  • The Tokio Marine Group on its acquisition of the LSE-listed Kiln Group (including the Kiln Lloyd’s of London operating entities)
  • The Park Group in regard to the acquisition by JLT Risk Solutions of the Park Group’s Bermuda broker
  • The Shanghai Fosun Group on the BVI law aspects of its proposed equity investment in the AIA Group
  • A Hong Kong family office on the restructuring (as a segregated account company) of its Bermuda investment holding entities
