profile: Pamella Mendez is an associate in the Litigation & Insolvency practice group and a member of the Employment and Immigration Team.

Her practice currently relates to a wide cross-section of immigration issues, including in particular relocation, work permits, business establishment and the securing of various types of residency in the Cayman Islands.

During her time at law School, she represented the Cayman Islands in the Commonwealth Legal Education Association Moot Completion held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2007, placing third in the Commonwealth ahead of jurisdictions such as Canada and India.

Pamella has previous fiduciary and administration experience from her tenure in the compliance department at a major international funds service provider in the Cayman Islands.

Cayman Islands: New Immigration Law expected to take effect
The Immigration (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill and its supposed “suspension” of rollover are expected to pass into effect shortly. Subject to a constitutional challenge which has been raised, the Governor’s formal assent and subsequent gazetting are required before it formally becomes law. The new law will not actually suspend rollover; rather, it will create two new types of work permit, the Term Limit Exemption Permit (“TLEP”) and Ten Year Work Permit. For employees who are not presently designated as key, a TLEP offers a potential limited reprieve. However they will still be rolled over upon expiry of any TLEP issued, absent substantial other changes to the legislation.
