Nicola Bashforth is an associate in the Banking & Asset Finance team within the Corporate & Commercial practice group in the Cayman Islands office.

Nicola joined Appleby in May 2011 and has many years' experience as a Cayman Islands attorney practising in all aspects of corporate and commercial law and with specialist knowledge and experience in all structured products transactions, including CLOs, securitisations, repackagings, derivatives, corporate bond offerings and sovereign debt issuances; corporate finance; private equity; hedge funds and fund lending; other secured lending transactions; restructurings and acquisitions.

Prior to joining Appleby, Nicola was a senior associate at another offshore magic-circle law firm based in their Cayman Islands office. Prior to this, Nicola was an associate at Clifford Chance LLP, London in their International Securitisation Group.

  • BlackRock on the Cayman Islands legal aspects of their merger with Merrill Lynch Investment Managers in 2006 and their US$13.5 billion acquisition of Barclays Global Investors in 2009


  • Acting for HSBC as arranger on the US$312 million first public bond offering by the Government of the Cayman Islands in 2009


  • Acting on a number of the multi-billion-dollar portfolio sales of defaulting structured debt during the financial crisis for both the selling institutions and purchasers


  • Advising a Middle Eastern banking institution on its US$600 million Eurobond issuance through a Cayman Islands issuer (2010)


  • Advising the placements agents on the US$260 million debt issuance for a major international oil corporation (2010)
