Maria Lau is an associate in the Hong Kong office. She practises in the area of Corporate & Commercial law, specialising in banking and asset finance, structured finance, private/public offerings of debt and equity, mergers & acquisitions, restructuring and corporate advisory.

She joined Appleby in October 2008, having previously worked at a law firm in Canada.

  • On the establishment and the renewal of a US$1 billion euro medium term note programme provided by The Link Finance (Cayman) 2009 Limited, an indirect subsidiary of The Link REIT, which is the first REIT listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEx) with a property portfolio comprising 180 retail and car-park facilities across Hong Kong
  • On the first dual primary listing application by way of introduction made by a BVI company to the main board of the HKEx, the BVI company being China New Town Development Company Limited, which has been listed on the SGX-ST since November 2007
  • In relation to a US$600 million term loan and revolving credit facility undertaken by Genting Hong Kong Limited, formerly known as Star Cruises Limited, a Bermuda company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and traded on the Quotation and Execution System for Trading of the SGX-ST.  The loan was secured by the company’s eight-vessel Asian fleet
  • In relation to a term loan facility of up to US$60 million (or its RMB equivalent) provided by Asian Development Bank to two wholly owned subsidiaries (Tianjin Century Concord Windpower  Investment Ltd. and Century Concord Wind Power Investment Co., Ltd) of China WindPower Group Limited (a Bermuda company listed on the HKEx with stock code 182).  The two subsidiaries intended to make equity investments in multiple project companies for the construction and operation of up to 800 megawatts of new stand-alone wind farms by 2013, mainly in Jilin Province, PRC
  • In connection with US$20 million term facilities provided by Standard Chartered Bank to an oil and gas company for its acquisition of the minority shares in an oil and gas company planned as a squeeze-out merger of the oil and gas company with a Bermudian SPC
