Kyle Sutherland is a senior associate in the Corporate & Commercial department at Appleby. He is qualified to advise on both the laws of the BVI and Isle of Man, and specialises in a broad range of corporate and commercial disciplines in those jurisdictions, ranging from joint venture work, restructurings, mergers and acquisitions, asset finance transactions, private placement and listing work.

Kyle qualified as an Isle of Man advocate in 2003, before leaving the Island and spending several years working in Manchester, England, specialising in mergers and acquisitions, with a particular emphasis on the pharmacy sector. Prior to joining Appleby in August 2010, Kyle spent three years as a senior associate in the corporate department of a leading British Virgin Islands law firm, where he was involved in a wide spectrum of cross-border transactions, and was lead lawyer on a number of high-profile deals.

  • A listed gold-mining company in respect of a merger of its BVI subsidiary with the BVI subsidiary of another major gold-mining group with a deal value of US$530 million


  • The purchaser on the BVI legal aspects of a takeover of a European state-owned petrochemical company with a deal value of US$1.7 billion


  • The sellers on the BVI legal aspects involved in the restructuring and subsequent sale of the largest logistics group in Russia with a deal value of US$330 million


  • A BVI incorporated target company as BVI counsel in regard to a joint venture deal with a Chinese state-owned company with a deal value of US$3 billion
