James Bodi is Counsel in the Banking & Asset Finance team within the Corporate & Commercial department. He joined Appleby in November 1999 and rejoined the firm in November 2004. Prior to joining Appleby he practised law at McMillan, a prominent Canadian corporate law firm, and Thorsteinssons, Canada’s leading tax boutique.


James has extensive experience in corporate finance and capital markets, with particular emphasis on the shipping, aviation and natural resource sectors.

James is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Bermuda Bar Association.

  • The lenders in a US$7 billion financing of the Sakhalin II energy project 

  • A syndicate of banks led by a major Scandinavian lender in US$2.4 billion secured loan to Bergesen group

  • A major Persian gulf bank in a US$5 billion medium-term note programme listed on the London Stock Exchange

  • In relation to the redomiciliation of a listed Alberta oil exploration company to Bermuda

  • The purchaser in the acquisition of Babcock & Brown Infrastructure
