Bruce's areas of practice in corporate and commercial law includes shipping, ship and aircraft finance, project finance, bank and insurance company licensing, structured finance and mutual funds, unit trusts and private equity funds. Bruce is widely recognised as the leading shipping lawyer in the Cayman Islands, having played a major role in the adoption by the Cayman Islands of the international safety conventions, and subsequently, the establishment of the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry now called the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI).

Clients and legal practitioners interviewed by IFLR1000 described Bruce as a “much respected” lawyer at Appleby. As a result of his “creative, global-thinking” and “solution-oriented” manner of work, he is “on a par with senior partners at any European or US firm.”

Bruce has been ranked in many legal publications throughout his career. Some of the more recent rankings include Chambers Global 2011 where he is described as having many years of experience and continues to play a senior consultative role at Appleby. In 2010, Chambers Global also commented that Bruce has maintained “the strength of his much-praised shipping practice” and is “much in demand among fund managers for all issues ranging from launches to general troubleshooting”. PLC Which Lawyer? recognises Bruce as a senior figure for corporate/M&A work and as a Leading Lawyer in Capital Markets. In 2010, he was also listed in Expert World Guides as a leading lawyer for banking.

Bruce was admitted in 1982 as an Attorney-at-Law in the Cayman Islands, where he joined Appleby after four years with Norton Rose in London. Bruce is a member of the Cayman Islands Law Society.

Recent cases include:

  • Assisting a major Greek ship owner on a Luxembourg and NYSE listing, and the subsequent privatisation of a Cayman holding company for a substantial fleet of bulk carriers.
  • Acted for the shipping division of oil major, BP, in relation to the purchase, registration in Cayman, and financing of four platform support vessels and eight auxiliary rescue craft.
  • Assisted on the dual registration in Germany and Cayman and financing of eleven commercial newbuilding vessels managed by Ernst Jacob for German KG groups.
  • Involved in the recapitalization of a major reinsurer following losses from Hurricane Katrina and others in 2005.
