Appleby is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeremy Walton as the Litigation and Insolvency Practice Group Head in the Cayman Islands office. In his new role, Jeremy will manage the leading and largest litigation practice in the Cayman Islands under the global leadership of Partner and Litigation and Insolvency Practice Group Head, Andrew Bolton. This appointment will allow Andrew, who is also based in the Cayman Islands office, to focus on the global strategic development and oversight of the Litigation and Insolvency Practice Group across the firm’s twelve offices.
Jeremy specialises in international commercial litigation, including directors’ and shareholders’ disputes; insolvency work, including the dissolution of commercial joint ventures and the dismantling of corporate structures; asset-tracing and recovery work, often as part of cross-border and multi-jurisdictional litigation; and disputes in relation to both family and commercial trusts. Jeremy has significant experience in representing the full range of parties involved in fund-related matters including liquidators, directors, investment managers, auditors, shareholders and creditors.
Jeremy is an experienced advocate, with a large number of reported cases in the Grand Court, the Court of Appeal and the Privy Council in London. He has conducted litigation of considerable commercial and financial significance for an array of international clients including leading Cayman litigation, insolvency and restructuring cases.
In 2007, Jeremy launched the firm’s dedicated Fund Disputes Team, the first of its kind in the offshore market, of which he is Global Head. Since the team’s launch, Jeremy has been involved in the leading Cayman litigation, insolvency and restructuring cases. In 2008, Appleby was honoured with the award of “leading fund disputes team” in The Hedge Fund Journal US Awards.
Chambers Global, PLC Which Lawyer? and Legal 500 have all ranked Jeremy as a leading lawyer in the Cayman Islands. Chambers Global notes that peers emphasise “his quality and reputation” (2010), while clients and legal practitioners interviewed in the 2009 edition of Chambers Global describe him as “the star of the show – persuasive, attentive and thoughtful” and laud his “terrific knowledge of Cayman law and first-rate written work.” Jeremy regularly speaks at conferences and writes for a range of publications.
Regarding the appointment, Andrew Bolton, Litigation and Insolvency Practice Group Head said, “Appleby has seen tremendous growth over the last few years and in order to continue to meet our clients’ needs with the excellent service that they have come to expect from us, each office requires a dedicated practice group head to ensure that we meet these expectations.” He continued “As I focus my energies on the global practice, Jeremy will provide the Cayman team with the strong leadership, energy and strength required to ensure that clients continue to receive the very best legal advice and representation possible – the service that has made us the leading offshore litigation practice.”
