Professional Development
Training
Training at Appleby begins with an extensive orientation for all new lawyers and staff. The programme is customised for the individual’s position and level of experience. Beyond the initial introductions and systems training, teams conduct formal and informal training with assistance from the office Training Coordinators.
There are also additional continuing legal education (CLE and CPD) programmes for lawyers. The programmes differ based on local CLE requirements and are designed to meet bar requirements while keeping lawyers informed of the latest developments. Externally, local bodies (such as Bermuda and Cayman Bar Associations) hold sessions that provide the lawyers with a broader perspective. In Bermuda, lawyers are required to complete eight hours of continuing legal education (CLE) for renewal of their practice certificate by the Bermuda Bar.
Lawyers who have completed their pupilage with us in Bermuda are required to complete two further six month seats in our Corporate Commercial, Trusts, Property, or Litigation Departments. This additional training will further prepare the lawyer for his or her career ahead. One of these seats may be in one’s home jurisdiction or another office in our global network. This gives the first year lawyer a chance to participate in a variety of work situations before having to choose a discipline.
Mentoring
Appleby offers a mentoring and training programme to our associates to provide greater structure and opportunity during their professional development. Associates with 1 – 5 years post qualification experience (PQE) are paired with a mentor. All mentors must have at least 5 years PQE and are often partners, counsel or senior lawyers.
Mentoring is very hands-on at Appleby. We realize that while lawyers are developing their skills, the mentoring relationship fills in the gaps that formal learning cannot. Learning how to serve clients, build relationships with co-workers, or simply learn their way around the group can be daunting. The mentor, having already gone through the process, can give guidance and feedback to the lawyer when needed.
