jersey BURSARY SCHEME

Bursary Awards

Appleby offers bursaries and work experience to Jersey residents intending to return to the island to pursue a career in law. The responsibility for determining the appropriate criteria, interviewing the applicants and deciding upon the ultimate recipients is vested in the Bursary Committee which is appointed by the Partners.

  1. The value of the annual bursary will be up to £1,500, paid in three equal instalments of £500 at the beginning of each term. However, the Bursary Committee will not grant the bursary to an applicant who will benefit from other bursary or scholarship awards for the same period.
  2. Subject to the recipient achieving satisfactory academic results, the award may continue for a period of up to three years (depending on the length of the degree course). Some measure of financial assistance may, at the Bursary Committee's discretion, be continued thereafter to cover the whole or some part of any further period required for eventual qualification.
  3. A bursary award is available only to Jersey residents who intend returning to Jersey to practise law.
  4. It is a condition of the award that recipients of bursary awards are enrolled in full time programs at a recognised university or educational institution. Applications will be considered from those undertaking a non-law degree, although it would be envisaged that the Graduate Diploma in Law would be undertaken thereafter. Should the recipient vary his or her enrolment or discontinue their course, they must notify the Human Resources team at Appleby immediately (preferably by email).
  5. Should the recipient be absent from their studies for a period in excess of two weeks during the time that the University/College is in session, they must also notify the Human Resources team at Appleby immediately (preferably by email). Consideration will then be given to the effect that such an absence has on their status as a student in the course.
  6. Continuation of the bursary award is subject to satisfactory progress and full time enrolment. Bursaries may be offered for the duration of the recipients’ course, subject to satisfactory progress on their part which will be reviewed annually. In order to assist in determining renewal of the bursary award, academic results including materials relevant to progress at the university shall be made available to Appleby at the end of each year.
  7. In the event of the failure of the recipient to make satisfactory progress and the subsequent withdrawal of this bursary, or should the recipient decide to vary or discontinue their course, they will not be expected to return to Appleby any funds received while a bona fide student.
  8. Bursary recipients must also take all reasonable steps to understand any personal tax liabilities by reviewing information on bursaries on the relevant country’s Tax Office website.
  9. Potential recipients will be required to undertake a minimum of one week's work experience with Appleby before confirmation of the granting of a bursary award.
  10. Recipients will be encouraged to undertake a minimum of four weeks’ work experience with the firm in each calendar year of the course.
  11. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed in March/April by the Bursary Committee.
  12. The closing date for applications is 28th February in each year.
