Legal Education Scholarship - Bermuda

The Partners of Appleby have been awarding scholarships and bursaries to suitably qualified Bermudian applicants since 1977. The responsibility for determining the appropriate criteria, interviewing the applicants and deciding upon the ultimate recipients is vested in the Scholarship Committee which is appointed by the Partners.

  1. The current value of the annual scholarship is $30,000. Since account is taken of the applicant's particular circumstances and his or her projected educational and living costs, the Scholarship Committee may increase the amount in appropriate circumstances. However, the Scholarship Committee will not grant the scholarship to an applicant who will benefit from other awards of more than $5,000.

  2. Subject to the recipient achieving satisfactory academic results, the award continues for a period of up to three years (depending on the length of the degree course). Some measure of financial assistance may, at the Scholarship Committee's discretion, be continued thereafter to cover the whole or some part of any further period required for eventual qualification.

  3. The scholarship is available only to Bermudians who intend returning to Bermuda to practice law.

  4. Applicants must be able to satisfy the necessary entrance requirements for acceptance into an accredited law degree course leading to a Commonwealth legal qualification, which in turn will lead to admission to the Bermuda bar.

  5. Applicants must submit the following documents to the Scholarship Committee: (i) two character references and two references as to academic ability; (ii) true copies of all academic records and qualifications; (iii) letter from the Ministry of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing attesting to the fact that applicant has Bermudian status; (iv) a letter from Parent/Guardian/Other undertaking to accept responsibility for any additional funds; (v) medical certificate (not more than 1 year old); (vi) handwritten submission stating career intentions, civic and extra-curricular activities, and why considered qualified to receive this scholarship; (vii) proof of acceptance to any approved university; and (viii) a completed Appleby scholarship application form.

  6. An applicant's financial means, as well as his or her academic ability and suitability for legal studies will be taken into account in choosing the successful recipient.
  7. In addition to the scholarship, the Scholarship Committee may, at its discretion, decide to award one or more bursaries in a given year.

  8. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed, in early August, by the Scholarship Committee.

  9. The closing date for applications is 15th July in each year.
