The BVI pioneered the concept of the International Business Company through its International Business Companies Act which came into force in 1984. Although this Act has now been replaced by the BVI Business Companies Act, 2004, it was instrumental in the Territory’s success in being able to attract significant numbers of mutual fund, captive insurance and trust companies to its shores. Close to one million companies have been incorporated in the jurisdiction.
The jurisdiction continues to enhance its reputation for being an extremely well-regulated, transparent and co-operative financial centre and maintains a rigorous anti-money laundering culture. It remains committed to the OECD principles of exchange of information and transparency in tax matters, as demonstrated by the Territory’s listing on the OECD “White List”.
