Leukaemia & lymphoma golf day
The Leukaemia & Lymphoma Golf day saw 26 teams, each with four players, playing 18 holes of golf, commencing with a shot gun start at 9.00am. The winning team took home the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Team Trophy. The game was followed by a presentation and a charity raffle to raise further funds for the charity. A total of £17,000 was raised on the day.
Not only was 2010 Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research's 50th anniversary, but the golf match was extra special given that Alastair Campbell, the charity’s Chairman of Fundraising was playing with one of Appleby's teams on the day. Alastair Campbell is best known for his years as communications director for former Prime Minister Tony Blair, for whom he worked from 1994 to 2003. He has devoted considerable time and effort to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research following the death of his best friend John Merritt from leukaemia in 1992. John’s daughter Ellie also died of the disease six years later.
Christine Rowland - Committee Member of the Jersey Branch for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, commented; “We are especially delighted to announce that we have a new major sponsor for this event in Appleby. Without their help it would have been almost impossible to stage an event of this kind. We are also pleased that Alastair Campbell agreed to play in the competition. We all enjoyed an excellent day.”
